Lara Herscovitch, an engaging contemporary singer-songwriter from Connecticut, emerged as the winner from among 10 finalists in the 11th Annual Singer-Songwriter Showcase this month at SolarFest, which bills itself as New England’s renewable energy festival.

She was chosen from among 10 singer-songwriters who were selected to perform two songs each during the festival, July 15-17, at the Forget-Me-Not Farm in Tinmouth, Vermont. In addition to a cash prize and studio time, Herscovitch will be invited back to perform as a featured artist during next year’s SolarFest. Contestants were judged based on the quality of song composition (both music and lyrics), arrangement, vocal ability, instrumental technique and overall performance skills.

“The contest is a great opportunity for emerging singer-songwriters,” says Phil Henry, a winner of the contest in 2005 and the organizer of this year’s showcase. “The stage is impressive; the judging is done by regional music professionals who can be excellent contacts for their careers; and the networking is invaluable,” he told AcousticMusicScene.com earlier this year.

Herscovitch, whose music blends acoustic folk with pop, jazz, blues and Latin influences, also was Connecticut’s State Troubadour for 2009 and 2010 and served as an ambassador of music and song to encourage cultural literacy and promote the state.

Hailed as “a remarkable performer” on WSHU’s “Profiles in Folk,” with a voice “clear and smooth like expensive liquor” (Northeast Performer), Herscovitch has showcased at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, and been a finalist in a umber of other singer-songwriter competitions.

Trained as a policy social worker, Herscovitch has worked in the U.S., Latin America and Asia on behalf of disadvantaged populations. Echoes of personal, individual issues as well as global themes of equity and social justice resonate throughout her music. Herscovitch’s fourth studio album, Through a Frozen Midnight Sky, was released in 2009.
